Marshalltown’s Immigration Summit

Plans for the National Summit on Immigration taking place in Marshalltown, Iowa continue to come together, with almost the entire schedule set.
Headlining the morning session on enforcement of U.S. immigration laws will be Marci Forman, the director of investigations for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She is making the trip from Washington, D.C. especially for the summit.
She will follow introductory comments from Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa.
Also included in that portion of the event will be Lon Walker, Marshalltown’s police chief, and Marshall County Sheriff Ted Kamatchus.
The second session of the morning will be a discussion of immigration in Marshalltown with an introduction by Tim Wynes.
Following him will be Ken Anderson, president of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Harrison Cass, superintendent of the Marshalltown Community School District; Dr. Barbara Burrows, with the Marshalltown Community College; and Marshalltown resident Sylvestre Vargas Garcia.
The third session will be on employers’ rights and responsibilities with an introduction by Anderson. Following him will be Paul Gregoirie, the human resources director for Fisher Controls; Liz Zuercher, director of public relations and marketing for Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center; and a representative from immigration yet to be named.
Session four will focus on an individual’s rights and responsibilities with an introduction by the Rev. Gregg Davison of Trinity Lutheran Church. Following him will be Sister Christine Feagan of St. Mary Catholic Church; Martha Garcia, with Latinos en Accion de CCI; Ruben Rodriguez, also with Latinos en Accion; and Chris Clausen, an attorney with the Boliver Law Firm.
Session Five will conclude the event with a focus on shaping U.S. immigration policy, with an introduction by former Marshalltown Mayor Floyd Harthun.
Also participating in that session will be Lori Chesser, with the Essential Workers Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association; Carlos Rios, with the Immigrants Rights Network of Iowa and Nebraska Executive Director; and Jolaine-Mari Monico, with the Bureau of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
