Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29 were National Call-in Days in support of comprehensive immigration reform for a comprehensive immigration bill sponsored by Reps. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., and Jeff Flake, R. Ariz.The White House is working with Republicans to deliver votes for the bill. The Gutierrez-Flake bill was introduced to
appeal to conservatives in case the bill is vetoed so that the congressmen are able to override the veto. It provides six-year work visas but will require that the immigrant exit the country at some point during the period.The bill would make those who were here before June 1, 2006, eligible for legalization. A $500 fine, a security test would need to be passed, background checks, and proof of active employment is also needed. After another six years, immigrants who have learned English, have crime-free records, and paid another $1,500 fine, would be eligible for residency. This is the only immigration bill in the House of Representatives and is currently in the Judiciary committee. Supporters of immigration reform say that the White House is serious about passing a bill but the Mexican American Political Association declares the bill unacceptable. In a press release, MAPA said that they “recognize the legislative initiative on federal immigration reform, but characterize it as enforcement heavy and legislation light.” “We absolutely are not for accepting just anything as a way to turn to our constituency and declare some vague victory on immigration reform,” MAPA stated.
