SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, child care assistance and other programs remain open in Iowa, while 2026 SUN Bucks applications have closed. This guide brings the main dates and changes together in one place.

IOWA — Iowa assistance programs do not follow a single calendar. SNAP, WIC, Medicaid and Child Care Assistance accept applications throughout the year. Other benefits, however, have annual deadlines, renewal periods or dates that depend on the program.
As of September 2026, SUN Bucks applications have closed. Meanwhile, Iowa is accepting Rent Reimbursement claims for rent paid in 2025 and 2024. Some Medicaid members also have new dates to track before the end of the year.
This page brings together the current status of eight programs: SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Rent Reimbursement, Child Care Assistance, SUN Bucks, unemployment benefits and Iowa’s Homestead Exemption.

SNAP, WIC, Medicaid and child care assistance remain open in Iowa
Several major Iowa benefit programs remain open year-round. Others have already reached a 2026 deadline or are moving toward their next important date.

SNAP deposits benefits from the 1st through the 10th each month
SNAP accepts applications in Iowa throughout the year. Households may apply when they meet the income, household and other program rules.
For regular monthly benefits, the payment date depends on the first letter of the last name listed as the primary case name.
- A-B: 1st.
- C-D: 2nd.
- E-G: 3rd.
- H-I: 4th.
- J-L: 5th.
- M-O: 6th.
- P-R: 7th.
- S: 8th.
- T-V: 9th.
- W-Z: 10th.
In addition, the schedule does not move when a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday.
WIC income limits remain in effect through June 2027
WIC remains open to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum participants, as well as infants and children under age 5 who meet program rules.
The current income limits took effect July 1, 2026, and remain in place through June 30, 2027. For example, a household of four can have up to $61,050 in gross annual income, or $5,088 per month, and still meet the income requirement.
In some cases, participation in SNAP, Medicaid or the Family Investment Program can establish income eligibility for WIC. Applicants still need to complete the certification process.
Medicaid has another plan-change cutoff on Oct. 19
Iowa Medicaid continues to accept applications. Renewals, plan selection and member information updates follow separate schedules.
The next cutoff for members who are currently eligible to change their medical or dental plan is Oct. 19, 2026. If an eligible change is processed before that date, it may take effect Nov. 1.
However, Oct. 19 is not a general deadline for keeping Medicaid coverage. Members who plan to stay with their current plan do not need to change it because of that cutoff.
Another change begins later in 2026 for some Iowa Health and Wellness Plan members. Starting Dec. 1, 2026, certain new applicants will face monthly work, education, training or community service requirements.
For people already enrolled, those requirements begin with renewals scheduled on or after February 2027 when they apply.
Rent Reimbursement is accepting claims for 2025 and 2024 rent
Iowa is processing Rent Reimbursement claims for eligible residents who paid rent during 2025 or 2024.
For a 2025 claim, total annual household income must be below $26,895. The program is available to people who were age 65 or older during the year being claimed. Certain adults age 18 or older with a total disability may also qualify.
The reimbursement can reach up to $1,000. However, the actual payment depends on household income and the amount of rent paid.
Child Care Assistance continues accepting applications year-round
Child Care Assistance, or CCA, helps eligible families pay for child care. A parent or guardian may qualify while working, attending school, completing training, looking for work or meeting another approved condition.
In general, assistance may cover children under age 13. Children with special needs may receive coverage through age 19.
Eligibility also depends on household income and the qualifying activity of the responsible adult. Working parents generally need to average at least 32 hours per week.
However, that requirement may fall to 28 hours when the family has a child with special needs who requires care. Iowa’s 2026 family copayment tables took effect July 1, 2026.
SUN Bucks applications are closed, but the $120 benefit may still be available
Iowa closed the 2026 SUN Bucks application period on Aug. 14.
Still, the end of the application period does not cancel benefits that were already issued. Each eligible child received a one-time $120 food benefit.
Those funds remain available for 122 days after the individual issue date. After that period, any remaining balance expires and cannot be restored.
Because benefits were issued on different dates, families do not all share the same expiration date.
Unemployment benefits can reach $790 per week
Iowa increased unemployment insurance benefit amounts for new claims effective July 5, 2026, or later.
The maximum weekly benefit now ranges from $644 for a person with no dependents to $790 for a person with four or more dependents. Individual payments depend on base-period wages and other eligibility rules.
Most claims provide up to 16 weeks of benefits. By contrast, a claim tied to a permanent business closure may provide up to 26 weeks when the conditions are met.
To continue receiving payments, claimants must file a weekly claim. Unless exempt, they must also complete four reemployment activities each week. At least three must be job applications.
The new Homestead Exemption reduces taxable value by 10%
Iowa replaced its previous Homestead Tax Credit in 2026 with a new exemption that reduces the taxable value of an eligible home.
For the 2026 assessment year, the exemption equals 10% of taxable value. The minimum exemption is $5,500, while the maximum is $20,000.
Homeowners who were already receiving the benefit before July 1, 2026, do not need to file a new application as long as they remain eligible.
New applicants, however, must file the claim with their city or county assessor. The deadline for a new application to apply to the 2026 assessment year was July 1. Applications filed later apply to the next assessment year.
Six changes are shaping Iowa benefits in late 2026
- July 1: new WIC income limits and Child Care Assistance copayment tables took effect.
- July 2: SNAP and SUN Bucks returned to federal food purchasing rules after Iowa stopped applying restrictions under its Healthy SNAP Waiver.
- July 5: higher unemployment benefit maximums took effect for new claims, with the maximum reaching $790 per week.
- Aug. 14: the 2026 SUN Bucks application period closed.
- 2026: Iowa replaced the Homestead Tax Credit with an exemption equal to 10% of taxable value within established limits.
- Dec. 1: new community engagement requirements begin for certain Iowa Health and Wellness Plan applicants.
Iowa’s state portal accepts applications for SNAP, Medicaid and other programs
Iowa Health and Human Services allows residents to check eligibility and apply for several programs through its official benefits and assistance portal.
Not every program has the same deadline. Some remain open throughout the year. Others depend on an annual filing date, a renewal month or the date a benefit was issued.
