Iowa is still accepting claims for rent paid in 2025 and 2024. The regular filing deadline has passed, but late claims may still be accepted under the state’s extension rules.

IOWA — Low-income Iowa renters who are 65 or older or have a qualifying total disability may still be able to claim up to $1,000 through Iowa’s Rent Reimbursement program.
As of Sept. 24, 2026, Iowa Health and Human Services continues to accept claims for rent paid in 2025 and 2024. For a 2025 claim, total household income must be less than $26,895. For a 2024 claim, the limit is less than $26,219.
The regular filing deadline is June 1 of the year after the rent was paid. Iowa law allows HHS to extend that deadline when good cause exists and the claimant requests additional time. Because these are late claims, renters who have not yet applied should submit their information as soon as possible or contact the Rent Reimbursement Unit at 515-420-6077 with questions about filing.
The payment is not automatically $1,000. Iowa calculates the reimbursement using the amount of rent paid and the household’s income.
Who qualifies for Iowa Rent Reimbursement in 2026?
For a claim based on rent paid in 2025, an applicant generally must meet all of the following requirements:
- Have been 65 or older by Dec. 31, 2025, or have been at least 18 and totally disabled by that date.
- Currently live in Iowa.
- Have rented a home in Iowa during 2025.
- Have lived in a rental property that was subject to property taxes.
- Have total annual household income below $26,895.
For the disability pathway, Iowa defines total disability as being unable to engage in substantial gainful employment because of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment expected to result in death or last at least 12 months.
The program recognizes qualifying disability determinations from the Social Security Administration or Railroad Retirement Board, as well as a 100% disability rating or payment from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The 2025 household income limit is $26,894.99
For rent paid during 2025, a household must have annual income of $26,894.99 or less. Income of $26,895 or more is above the program’s limit for that claim year.
Iowa uses the following income schedule when calculating a 2025 reimbursement:

For rent paid in 2024, the household income limit is $26,218.99.
Married spouses living together are considered one household. Iowa generally counts income from both spouses when determining eligibility. If the spouses lived together for only part of the claim year, different income-counting rules can apply.
The reimbursement can reach $1,000, but the payment may be smaller
Iowa considers 23% of gross rent paid to be the portion attributable to property taxes.
For claims based on rent paid in 2025 or 2024, the state first calculates 23% of the eligible rent. The amount used in the calculation is capped at $1,000.
Iowa then applies the percentage associated with the household’s income.
For example, if 23% of eligible rent equals $920 and the household’s income falls within the 50% reimbursement bracket, the reimbursement would be $460.
That means meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a $1,000 payment.
Iowa is still accepting claims for rent paid in 2025 and 2024
The regular deadline for a Rent Reimbursement claim is June 1 of the year after the rent was paid.
That means the regular deadline for rent paid in 2025 was June 1, 2026, while the regular deadline for a 2024 claim was June 1, 2025.
However, Iowa law allows HHS to extend the deadline when good cause exists and the claimant requests additional time.
For a 2024 claim, the latest possible extension under state law is Dec. 31, 2026. For a 2025 claim, an extension cannot go beyond Dec. 31, 2027.
Iowa HHS currently continues to offer applications for both 2025 and 2024 claims. Because an extension is not the same as the regular filing period, people filing late should apply promptly and contact HHS if they have questions about their claim.
A person seeking reimbursement for both years must file a separate claim for each year.
Applicants may need identity, income, disability and rent documents
Iowa HHS may request several types of documentation to verify a Rent Reimbursement claim.
Applicants should be prepared to provide identification, which may include a driver’s license, Social Security card, birth certificate, passport or another accepted identity document.
Income records may include:
- pay stubs or W-2 forms;
- self-employment records;
- Social Security benefit statements;
- Veterans benefits or disability statements;
- pension, IRA, annuity or military retirement records;
- interest, dividend, business, farm or capital gain records;
- other documents showing money received by the household.
Proof of rent paid is also required. Examples include:
- a signed lease or rental ledger;
- rent receipts;
- cashed checks used for rent;
- HUD/HAP or Section 8 statements;
- a landlord letter or payment record;
- the Iowa HHS Rent Reimbursement Landlord Rent Verification form, 470-5713.
Applicants also need their landlord’s name, address and phone number.
People choosing direct deposit should have their bank routing number and account number available.
Renters can apply online or get help without internet access
The fastest option is the Iowa HHS Rent Reimbursement portal.

People who do not have reliable internet access can also get help through a local Iowa HHS office.
Adults age 60 and older can seek application assistance through their local Area Agency on Aging. People younger than 60 with a disability can use a Disability Access Point.
Some Community Action Agencies also help residents complete Rent Reimbursement applications in the counties they serve.

Applicants can check their Rent Reimbursement claim status online
Rent Reimbursement claims can take up to 90 days for an eligibility determination.
Submitting the required documents with the application can help avoid delays caused by missing information.
If HHS needs additional information, the agency sends a request to the mailing address listed on the claim. Applicants who move after submitting should contact the Rent Reimbursement Unit at 515-420-6077.
People who filed electronically can use the Iowa HHS benefits system to check the status of their claim.
If approved, the reimbursement may take up to 30 additional days to arrive after the decision date.
Applicants can choose direct deposit or a paper check by mail.
A denied Rent Reimbursement claim can be appealed
A person who disagrees with an Iowa HHS decision on Rent Reimbursement generally has 30 days to file an appeal.
The deadline is measured from the notice of decision. Iowa may consider a late appeal in limited circumstances when good cause prevented the person from filing on time.
Applicants should follow the appeal instructions included with their HHS notice.
The maximum will rise to $1,500 for rent paid in 2026
A new Iowa law increases the maximum amount used in the Rent Reimbursement calculation from $1,000 to $1,500 for claims based on rent paid in base years beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
That change does not increase current claims for rent paid in 2025 or 2024. Those claims remain subject to the $1,000 maximum.
The higher limit will become relevant when Iowa begins processing claims based on rent paid during 2026.

Applicants should use the Iowa HHS benefits portal, official state forms or recognized assistance agencies when submitting personal information.
