The streets of Downtown Moline will resemble a packed Lucha Libre arena as local highflying wrestlers step into the ring for the first time at Mercado on Fifth in Downtown Moline on Friday, June 18.
The night will feature the masked luchador Latin Thunder and Corn Boii along with other up-and-coming area wrestlers. Mercado on Fifth is an outdoor event from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every Friday on 5th Avenue between 11th and 12th streets in Moline. The weekly gathering features food trucks, produce/retail vendors, live entertainment and activities for children.
Latin Thunder is Iowa’s own Lucha Libre Superstar. Growing up in Muscatine Iowa to parents of Mexican descent Latin Thunder knew about the world of Lucha Libre from his father Jorge. His dad told him stories of reading comics of El Santo as a child and watching lucha libre in Piedras Negras.
“The masked luchador is a superhero really, that’s how kids look at us. And it’s been great to see so many kids who aren’t even Hispanic love the character. I’m very proud to be bringing something from Mexican culture to Iowa and people of all nationalities are enjoying it!”
