Fort Madison, IA- The Fort Madison Fiesta is a cherished tradition in Iowa, celebrating its 103rd year in 2024. This vibrant event honors Mexico’s independence from Spain and embraces the rich heritage and culture of the local Mexican community. Angela Salazar, president of the Fort Madison Fiesta Committee, provides an insightful overview of this year’s festivities. Taking place from September 12th to 14th, the Fiesta transforms the Mexican Village on Avenue Q into a lively hub of music, dance, and delicious food, drawing families and friends together in a spirited reunion.

At the heart of the Fiesta are its community-centric goals. A significant focus is on youth, with the selection of a Royal Court. Salazar explains that, “the children and young adults are a big part of our Fiesta celebration. There are two Queens selected as well as the Princess Court. The Queens represent the Fiesta year round and receive a scholarship for college.” Additionally, the La Fiesta Dance Troupe will perform traditional dances, showcasing various styles of Mexican dances in their performances. “Saturday activities include a bike helmet fitting and giveaway as well as ‘touch a truck’, eating contests, and a carnival,” shares Salazar.

The history of the Fiesta dates back to 1921 when Mexican workers arrived in Fort Madison to work on the Santa Fe Railroad. Over time, these workers established homes and a thriving community in what became known as the Mexican Village. The Fiesta evolved from its humble beginnings, where families sold food from their front window doorsteps to a well-organized celebration managed by a dedicated committee.

This year’s Fiesta brings exciting new attractions, notably the repair of the Shelter House’s roof, funded by a grant from BNSF. This improvement ensures a comfortable and dry space for attendees, regardless of weather conditions. Another highlight is the showcase of Alebrijes, colorful Mexican folk-art sculptures created by local children in art classes sponsored by the

Keokuk Area Community Foundation. These creations will be featured in the Fiesta program and displayed at the Fort Madison Art Association’s September gallery show.

The Fiesta has a significant positive impact on the local community. Aside from providing scholarships, the event fosters cultural education and artistic expression. Last year, artists from original village families were showcased in a gallery show, and children and their families created piñatas and stage decorations together. This year, the Fiesta Committee also donated over 30 library books by Mexican authors, promoting literacy and cultural awareness. Salazar explains that, “the Fiesta Committee purchased more than 30 children and young adult library books written by Mexican authors under this grant and plans to increase the number of classes offered in 2025.”

Volunteer opportunities abound, like preparing the Fiesta grounds and maintaining cleanliness during the event. “We always need help decorating the float for the Rodeo parade which is on September 7 this year,” Salazar mentions. Volunteers and sponsorships play a crucial role in the Fiesta’s success. Highlights of the Fiesta include live music, street dances, and performances by popular acts like Fidelio and Crooked Cactus who regularly draw crowds.

Traditional Mexican food and drinks are a staple, with vendors offering authentic cuisine, and the Shelter House serving beverages. Friday’s activities cater specifically to elementary aged kids, and Saturday features family-oriented events, ensuring an inclusive experience for all ages.

Looking ahead, the Fiesta Committee aims to expand children’s activities and offer year-round art classes with a cultural focus. Long-term projects include establishing a cultural heritage museum, installing street markers, organizing garden tours, and creating murals. The goal is to continually innovate and improve the Fiesta while preserving its core values.

Community support extends beyond attendance, with fundraising efforts for the Queen and Princess Court being vital. Salazar invites everyone to bring their families, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy the Fiesta’s unique blend of culture, tradition, and fun. For more information and updates, the Fiesta’s Facebook page, local radio stations, newspapers, and website, Fortmadisonmexicanfiesta.com, are excellent resources. The event remains free for all, embodying a spirit of inclusivity and celebration.
