West Liberty, IA – LULAC Council 310 of West Liberty will host a free community Health & Wellness Memorial Fair on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 111 West 7th Street, West Liberty, IA 52776, in honor of Fr. Guillermo “Memo” Treviño Jr.
The event is organized in remembrance of Treviño, whose passing was linked to undiagnosed diabetes and complications that became irreversible. Organizers say the fair aims to raise awareness about preventable health conditions and connect families with critical resources.
According to organizers, the event will provide completely free health screenings, including blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride checks. Additional basic health measurements such as weight and height will also be available.
“Too many in our community are living with conditions like diabetes without knowing it,” organizers shared. “This event is about education, prevention, and honoring Fr. Guillermo’s legacy by helping others.”
Health data underscores the urgency of the effort. More than 50% of Hispanic adults are expected to develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime, and 1 in 10 adults in the United States currently lives with diabetes. Organizers encourage residents to take advantage of the free screenings and resources available.
Beyond medical services, attendees will have access to a variety of community resources, including mental health and stress management support, behavioral health guidance, problem-solving tools, and immigration “Know Your Rights” information. The University of Iowa Mobile Health Clinic will also be on-site, along with voter registration resources and additional community support services.
The event will also feature the West Liberty Community Closet and an opportunity to contribute personal stories about Fr. Treviño as part of the Iowa Vital Voices Project.
At 2 p.m., participants are invited to take part in a one-mile fitness walk in honor of Treviño, celebrating his life while promoting healthy lifestyles.
Local partners supporting the event include the University of Iowa Mobile Health Clinic, Jeff’s Market, DSCL, Cortés/Menolab, and LULAC. Jeff’s Market will provide healthy snacks and water for attendees throughout the event.
Organizers, including members of the Treviño family, invite the entire community to attend.
“This is more than a health fair — it’s a chance to come together, support one another, and take proactive steps toward better health,” organizers said.
For families across West Liberty and surrounding communities, the message is simple: get checked, get informed, and take care of your health — for yourself and for your loved ones.
