Des Moines, IA-Despite the recent uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s freeze on federal spending of loans and grants, U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, said she plans to continue work to weed out “woke spending sprees” in the government.
Trump administration officials say the decision to freeze spending on federal grants and loans was to complete a review to check compliance with recent executive orders. Trump rescinded a memo about the freeze Wednesday after public confusion and legal challenges.
Hinson, who represents Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, said she witnessed increased fearmongering this week about the Trump administration’s funding freeze. She said her office is working with Iowans and stakeholders to clarify any confusion.
“It did not impact direct assistance to folks like Social Security, Head Start, Section 8 housing, for example,” Hinson told reporters Thursday. “The point is to ensure that all federal funding is really in line with what the American people voted for and to end the abuse of taxpayer dollars on woke priorities that we saw go rampant under the Biden administration.”
Iowa entities that operate fully or partially via grants, like Iowa nonprofits, cities and schools were left with questions after a judge blocked Trump’s order.
“My approach to everybody is that if it’s a good use of taxpayer money, it’s going to be allowed to move forward. I am going to continue operating as I always have,” Hinsons said. “I always work to get those resources back to Iowa, those targeted investments back to Iowa, while working to prevent woke spending sprees.”

Hinson praises Trump administration’s ‘Border Czar’
Hinson said the Trump administration’s Border Czar Tom Homan is doing what the American people want by deporting immigrants living in the country illegally who have criminal records.
Homan has been a top official leading the Trump administration’s plan to crack down on immigration, including ramping up deportations of illegal immigrants who have criminal histories. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said this week all immigrants living in the country illegally are criminals.
“Frankly, after millions upon millions of people coming across our southern border, I’m hearing from Iowans, that they’re like ‘Rah-rah go ahead keep this up’ because that is exactly what they voted for in the mandate that we have to deliver on,” Hinson said.
During and after her election, Hinson has emphasized increasing border security as a top priority while in Congress.
