Univision, the largest Spanish language channel in the United States and the fifth largest of any language in the United States, will host a presidential debate for both the Democrats and Republicans on consecutive weeks in September. The debates will be held at the University of Miami and the debates will be the first to be in Spanish
with questions being translated into English for the candidates who can’t speak Spanish. The Democrats will have a debate on Sunday, September 9 and the Republicans will debate a week later on Sunday, September 16. Both debates will be broadcast live on the network.Only three candidates have committed to attending both debates. Latino Governor Bill Richardson of N.M. and Sen. Chris Dodd of Conn., who is also fluent in Spanish, are the only two Democrats to commit to the event. Sen. John McCain of Ariz. is the only Republican who has said yes. Some candidates may wait until the last moment to decide on whether they will attend.Neither presidential debate is sponsored by the Democrats or the Republicans. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. has said that she will only attend the six debates that are officially sponsored by her party.Julio Rumbaut, a Hispanic media consultant in Miami told the Miami Herald,
“It would behoove any candidate to take advantage of the opportunity; because if they don’t, another candidate will.”
