On November 15, people from all over the tri-state area came together in South Sioux City, Nebraska, to celebrate as Unity in Action marked its 10th anniversary with the ¡Unidos Avanzamos! Gala. The event honored a decade of transformative work empowering individuals and strengthening the Siouxland community.
Unity in Action has been a cornerstone for immigrants navigating the journey towards U.S. citizenship. The decision to become a citizen is not just a personal milestone, it’s a step that ripples throughout the entire community, fostering belonging, engagement, and mutual growth. Through its bilingual citizenship classes, Unity in Action has equipped countless individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the often complex path to citizenship. Their efforts have enriched both individuals and the broader Siouxland community.
The organization’s impact extends far beyond citizenship. In line with its nonpartisan mission, Unity in Action has worked tirelessly to boost voter participation. Their initiatives, including neighborhood canvassing, bilingual literature, and a robust social media campaign—have contributed to a significant rise in voter turnout in Dakota County. In the 2024 elections, voter participation soared from 11.78% in the primaries to 58.94% in the general election, thanks in part to their work creating accessible voting options like Spanish interpreters at polling locations.
Unity in Action’s Celebrate Siouxland Festival, established in 2021, has further reinforced its commitment to inclusivity. This initiative honors Siouxland’s vibrant cultural diversity by bringing people together through expressive arts, music, and food.
The ¡Unidos Avanzamos! Gala showcased these achievements and highlighted the enduring importance of building inclusive, unified communities. With live performances, inspiring speeches, and a celebration of cultural heritage, the evening was a testament to the power of collaboration and resilience. Unity in Action’s decade-long legacy continues to shine as a beacon of hope and unity for Siouxland and beyond.
