Since 2015, this collaborative celebration has been organized in Omaha, led by Sussiré Hernández, Alexander Sánchez, Hanoi Reyes, and Anett Dodds. The event is part of an initiative by the Venezuelans in the World (VenMundo) organization, which supports Venezuelans abroad and promotes their integration into local communities, while also sharing their culture with others.

Traditionally, the second Saturday in September is recognized as World Arepa Day, but in Omaha, it’s celebrated as El Arepazo. The date was adjusted to avoid overlapping with the Independence Day celebrations of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, which are also observed in Omaha. The goal is to integrate all communities in this shared celebration.

Through a WhatsApp group of over 200 Venezuelans, the community has organized tasks to ensure a memorable culinary experience for everyone attending. Attendees will not only enjoy lively conversation and a friendly atmosphere but also a variety of arepa fillings to choose from, including beef, chicken, eggs, ham, and more. Everyone is encouraged to share what they enjoy.

If you’d like to join the community or share your culinary skills, visit the event website: (https://framitt3.com/arepazo).
