Argentina will be the favorite to defend their gold medal at the Beijing Olympics that start Thursday, August 7, a day before opening ceremonies. Each team can only have 18 men on their roster and only three can be over the age of 23. Argentina will play with FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Boca Juniors’ Juan Roman Riquelme. Argentina is in Group A with Australia, the Ivory Coast, and Serbia. The previous tournament made a star out of Manchester United’s Carlos Tevez.
Everyone’s team, the United States, with Freddy Adu and Brian McBride will be in Group B with the Netherlands (Holland), Japan, and Nigeria. It’s hard to believe but Brazil has never won a gold medal in the Olympics and it’s the only championship they have never won. Alexandre Pato, Real Madrid’s Robinho, and Ronaldinho will play for Brazil. Brazil is in Group C with Belgium, China, and New Zealand. Group D is represented by Honduras, Cameroon, Italy, and North Korea. The two best teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals. The final will be Saturday, August 23.
