Finally, the orange cones will be gone. Finally, the end of twisted detours. Finally, the construction of I-74 Bridge nears to completion. And to celebrate this milestone the public will be allowed to walk the new bridge.
Everyone interested will get a once in a lifetime chance to walk the new east-bound bridge over the mighty Mississippi between the cities of Moline and Bettendorf on December 1, 2021. The bridge will be open to traffic a few days after the celebration.
The I-74 River Bridge celebration will be from 1 pm to 4 pm and participants need to register for this event at https://i74riverbridge.com/bridge_celebration/ There will public parking and limited shuttle service provided by MetroLink. Public parking will be at the TaxSlayer Center located at 1201 River Dr., Moline. The shuttle service will start at 12:30 pm. The participants are advised to dress according to the weather and be ready to walk for about two blocks from the shuttle service drop off to the River Drive bridge ramp in Moline. At 1:30 pm Quad Cities leaders will deliver remarks at I-74 River Bridge Arch to kick off this historic celebration.
The new bridge will be wider and brighter than the old one. It will have four lanes in each direction and there will be a bicycle and pedestrian path. It is expected that the new bridge will bring new opportunities to the Quad Cities area.
The old bridge will finally retire and close as soon as the new one opens. Landscaping for the new bridge, an elevator in Bettendorf and decorative glass for the trail outlook will continue to be worked on into next year.
The construction of the new I-74 Bridge began in 2017 and this project came at a cost of $1.2Â billion.
Finally, the residents of the Quad Cities will be able to cross the river on the new bridge. No more traffic jams and detours.
