DES MOINES, Iowa – Long-time progressive activist and former Chicago mayoral candidate, Jesús “Chuy” Garcia, will be representing U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders at this year’s League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet.
Garcia, in his support of Sanders’ bid for president, praised his long record of fighting for civil rights and immigration reform. “Latinos are a critical part of the political revolution,” Garcia said. “And we support Bernie’s efforts to create an economy that works for us all.”

Jesús “Chuy” Garcia has served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners since 2010. In 1986, Garcia was elected to the Chicago City Council, and in 1992, he became the first ever Mexican-American member of the Illinois State Senate. Garcia ran for mayor of Chicago in 2015, forcing a run-off election between himself and incumbent, Rahm Emanuel.
Garcia is a long-time progressive voice and advocate of civil rights and immigration reform and continues to fight for fairness and equality for the Latino community, immigrants, and the working class.
