The NAACP will always stand up for voting rights and this is one of those times. This petition does not affect just one party, but all Scott County residents.
As you might be aware, our Scott County Auditor recently retired. With 3 1/2 years left of her tenure, this vacancy leaves quite the seat to fill as one of their most pertinent of duties as Auditor is fulfilling free and fair election, voting, and campaigning requirements. The Scott County Board of Supervisors recently announced they would be filling the vacancy with their own pick for County Auditor, leaving the voice of the people out of their decision making. The peril of this appointment is local voter suppression, poll watching, and other tactics meant to cause chaos at the voting booth in November.Â
Â
The NAACP remains a non-partisan organization and does not lend itself to one party. However, as a community, we have an opportunity to share our voices and concern over the special appointment through petitioning the Board of Supervisors.Â
Â
The law states that as registered Scott County voters, we may petition the decision to appoint a new Auditor and ask for a Special Election. A Special Election gives all registered voters who reside in Scott County back our democratic authority to elect the next County Auditor and not have our democratic process circumvented by the Scott County Board of Supervisors.
Â
In order to make this happen, the petition must include 9,500-14,000 signatures of registered Scott County voters.Â
