MUSCATINE, Iowa — Police have arrested Mark Lee Jackson, the man accused of shooting a Muscatine police officer during a pursuit Friday.
Officers took Jackson, 59, into custody without incident Monday evening, Aug. 17, in the 1100 block of Oak Street in Muscatine.
Prosecutors have charged Jackson with two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, both Class B felonies. He also faces charges of eluding and first-degree criminal mischief, both Class C felonies, and driving while barred, an aggravated misdemeanor.
The charges are allegations. Jackson has not been convicted in this case.
A judge ordered Jackson held without bond
Jackson appeared in court Tuesday, Aug. 18. A judge ordered him to remain in custody without bond.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 28.
Jackson also received citations for excessive speed, driving 21 mph over the limit, reckless driving and failing to obey a traffic control device.
Authorities allege that Jackson fired toward law enforcement officers during the pursuit Friday. One Muscatine police officer suffered a gunshot wound near the elbow.
The officer is recovering at home, and police expect a full recovery.
The pursuit began near Benham Avenue Friday afternoon
A Muscatine County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop Jackson’s vehicle at about 5:12 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, near Benham Avenue and Nebraska Street.
Authorities allege that Jackson refused to stop and continued driving at high speed.
During the pursuit, investigators say Jackson drove off the road, onto a bike path, through a fence and into a garage.
Later, officers found his vehicle near railroad tracks behind Gas Lantern Square.
At about 5:27 p.m., officers spotted Jackson running behind Home Base Bar on Grandview Avenue.
Authorities allege that Jackson fired at officers during the foot pursuit and struck one officer near the elbow.
More than 100 officers joined the search before the arrest
The search continued through the weekend and into Monday.
More than 100 officers from 16 agencies took part. Five tactical teams, three drone teams, an aviation unit and five K-9 teams also assisted.
Police searched about 120 acres after Jackson fled Friday.
While Jackson remained at large, authorities considered him armed and dangerous and asked the public not to approach him. That warning ended after police took him into custody Monday night.
Several agencies assisted Muscatine police during the manhunt, including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
