Santa might be the only person who looks and feels jolly with a big round belly. For us mere mortals having belly fat is very unhealthy and can lead to life altering diseases.  First, a quick review of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is an integrated system of small organs that involve the release of hormones. The endocrine system regulates your body’s metabolism, growth and development.   It also plays a part in determining your mood.

There has been much discussion among the health community on the effects of one hormone called cortisol on belly fat. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and helps regulate blood pressure and cardiovascular function.  Cortisol regulates energy by selecting the right type and amount of (carbohydrate, fat or protein) that is needed by the body to meet the body’s demands that is placed upon it.

Cortisol secretion increases in response to physical and psychological stress. It increases blood pressure and blood sugar and reduces immune responses.  It has been thought that cortisol directly influences food consumption. This can stimulate an individual to eat food that is high in fat and/or sugar.  When body tissues are exposed to high levels of cortisol for extended periods of time fat stores and excess circulating fat are relocated and deposited deep in the abdomen, which left unchecked can develop into or enhance obesity. Increased abdominal fat is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body.

Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. While it may seem that your body is working against you by producing chemicals that make you want to eat “comfort” food when you’re stressed, there are ways to work with your body during this Holiday Season.  Start with portion size (most portions should be the size of your palm), one helping not two of your favorite food.  Drink water before meals.  Eat often during the day (vegetables, nuts, low fat cheese will fill you up).  Plan your meal times and your meals (fast food is the biggest culprit of unhealthy eating).  Remember you eat to live not the other way around.  By following these tips the chances that you will be around for and enjoy many Holidays to come increase greatly.
