Former National LULAC President Margaret Moran awarded Michael Reyes of Davenport, the current deputy state director of LULAC-Iowa, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of leadership and service in leading Council 10 in the Quad Cities.
“I truly believe in LULAC and its mission to promote the Hispanic/Latino community,” Reyes said. “I am very humbled by this award, and I am thankful for the opportunity to work with all of the wonderful people within the organization through the years. It’s been a true privilege.”
Reyes has been involved with LULAC since the mid-1980s, and has served as president of Council 10 for many years. In this position, he has helped revitalize the council and raise public awareness of the role LULAC has played in the Quad Cities for more than 55 years.
Reyes has been appointed as the new state director of LULAC-Iowa. His appointment will be approved by the state board at its quarterly meeting on Aug. 8 in Iowa City.
Mary A. Campos of Des Moines received the Senior Award. Campos is deputy state director for the elderly. She has proven her deep commitment to the welfare of Latinos and Latino youth, and has a long history of being involved with and protecting the rights of Latinos.
Founded in 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens is the oldest U.S. Latino civil rights organization. There are more than 1,000 local LULAC councils, which hold voter registration drives, provide awareness to residents about language and immigration issues, sponsor programs and advocate for Latinos.
