Voters can cast in-person absentee ballots through Nov. 2 at county auditors’ offices and satellite sites, while mail ballot requests are due Oct. 19.
IOWA — Early in-person voting for the Nov. 3 general election begins Oct. 14 across all 99 counties, opening a 20-day window for voters to cast absentee ballots before Election Day. In-person voting continues through Nov. 2, while requests for ballots by mail are due Oct. 19.
Hours and satellite locations vary by county.
Scott County offers early voting at seven Davenport-area locations
Early voting in Scott County will be available at the Scott County Administrative Center, 600 W. 4th St. in Davenport, and six satellite locations across the county.
The Administrative Center will accept ballots weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Nov. 2. Satellite sites include the Bettendorf Public Library, the Davenport Public Library on Fairmount Street, Scott County Library in Eldridge, St. Anthony Catholic Church in Davenport, the Quad City Veterans Outreach Center, and CASI, 1035 W. Kimberly Road in Davenport.
Satellite hours vary by date and location. Scott County Auditor Kerri Tompkins said the auditor’s office will also be open Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Johnson County adds evening hours and UI satellite sites
Johnson County will combine weekday voting at the Auditor’s Office and a drive-thru site in Iowa City with evening hours and five University of Iowa satellite locations.
The Auditor’s Office is in the Johnson County Administration Building, 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City. The drive-thru site is at the Health and Human Services Building parking ramp, 855 S. Dubuque St.
“Voting After Dark” evening hours will be offered at multiple locations during the early voting period. The University of Iowa will operate five satellite voting sites on campus from Oct. 14 through Oct. 30, including the Iowa Memorial Union, UI Health Care Iowa River Landing, and the UI Health Care North Liberty campus.
Linn County opens early voting at Jean Oxley center, Lindale Mall
Linn County’s main early-voting site will be the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center, 935 2nd St. SW in Cedar Rapids, with an additional satellite location at Lindale Mall.
The Jean Oxley center will accept ballots weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. The Lindale Mall site in Cedar Rapids will be open Tuesday through Saturday during the early voting period, in the space previously occupied by American Eagle Outfitters.
Polk County will use 18 satellite voting sites
Polk County will operate 18 satellite voting locations. The Polk County Election Office at 2309 Euclid Ave. in Des Moines will offer early voting weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting Oct. 14 and on Saturdays Oct. 24 and Oct. 31.
Satellite locations in Polk County will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 19–24. Ballots can be cast at any satellite location in the county.
Mail ballot requests are due Oct. 19
Requests for mail ballots can be submitted starting Aug. 25 and must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 19.
The absentee ballot request form requires an Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID number, or the four-digit PIN on the voter’s Iowa Voter ID Card.
County auditors can begin mailing requested ballots Oct. 14. Completed mail ballots must arrive at the county auditor’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. Postmarks do not count.
Ballots can be returned by mail, hand-delivered to the auditor’s office, or placed in a secure drop box where available.
Voter registration deadline is also Oct. 19
Iowans who are not yet registered can pre-register online or by mail through Oct. 19. After that date, same-day registration is available at early voting sites and on Election Day.
Same-day registrants must provide proof of identification and proof of residence, such as a residential lease or utility bill. A registered voter from the same precinct can attest for an individual who lacks the required documents.
Iowa voters must show an accepted photo ID
Registered voters casting a ballot early or on Election Day must show one of the following forms of identification:
- Iowa driver’s license (not expired more than 90 days)
- Iowa non-operator ID (not expired more than 90 days)
- U.S. passport (not expired)
- U.S. military ID or Veteran ID (not expired)
- Iowa voter identification card (must be signed)
- Tribal ID card or document (must be signed, with photo, not expired)
Election Day is Nov. 3
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Iowa Secretary of State’s polling place lookup confirms each voter’s assigned polling place.
