Three activities are scheduled throughout Sept. 15, including a bilingual family program, a teen art project and an evening gathering at the Latino Native American Cultural Center.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa City will begin Hispanic Heritage Month on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with Spanish-language and Latino cultural activities for families, teens and the University of Iowa community.
The day begins with Spanish Bilingual Storytime at the Iowa City Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Later that afternoon, teens can create Día de Muertos-inspired artwork from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
In the evening, the Latino Native American Cultural Center will host a Latinx Heritage Month social from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 308 Melrose Ave.
Together, the three activities mark the first day of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
Spanish Bilingual Storytime begins at 10:30 a.m.
Iowa City Public Library will hold Spanish Bilingual Storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Storytime Room at 123 S. Linn St.
The program includes stories, songs, rhymes, movement and activities in both Spanish and English. In addition, the event is designed for babies, children and families and is open to the public.

Teens can create Día de Muertos art from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Later in the day, the library’s Teen Center will offer a Día de Muertos Skull and Frame Project from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Teens can create colorful Día de Muertos skull artwork or decorate a frame during the drop-in art session. Also, the activity is part of the library’s Tuesday teen craft programming.

Latinx Heritage Month social starts at 6:30 p.m.
Finally, the Cultural Centers Programming Board will hold a Latinx Heritage Month social from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Latino Native American Cultural Center, 308 Melrose Ave.
The gathering will include papel picado, Native friendship bracelets, esquites and Jarritos. At the same time, the event will open Latinx Heritage Month programming at the University of Iowa.
