The fifth Interliga that determines two of Mexico’s berths in the biggest tournament in the America’s, the Copa Libertadores will have stops in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco area. All matches in the Interliga will be televised on FOX Sports Español.
Mexico’s last two champions, Atlante and Pachuca are not allowed to participate as they have to be in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. As a result of the Mexican Futbol Federation (FMF) rules, the most recent champion that is not able to participate in the CONCACAF tournament receives an automatic berth to the Liberataodores. Chivas de Guadalajara qualifies automatically and receives the berth of “Mexico 1”.
The next best eight teams were drawn into two groups. In Group A, America, Atlas, Toluca, and Morelia will all face each other. While in Group B, Cruz Azul, Pumas, Monterrey, and San Luis will face off. The top two teams in each group advance to what is called Final 1 and Final 2.
An emphasis will be put on winning big as the team with the best record in their final will qualify automatically to the Libertadores as “Mexico 2”. The other team that wins their final, but that did not have the better record, will have to face another team from CONCACAF to qualify and will be known as “Mexico 3”.
