Chicago, IL — The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus released the following statement after a person was fatally shot by ICE during a traffic stop:

“The Caucus is actively working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding this incident, including the events that led to the altercation, the specifics of any warrant, and whether all actions complied with both state and federal laws.

The aggressive and reckless tactics employed in this incident are unacceptable. They threw an entire community into chaos. No one should have lost their life today. This incident marks the culmination of a week where individuals were arrested at a bus stop and while selling flowers—adding to the growing fear fueled by federal decisions that have left residents terrified of being arrested simply for the way they look or the language they speak.

“As we approach a weekend where countless Latinos will unite to celebrate their heritage, culture and legacy, we do so with pride—but we also do so with a sobering reminder of the continuous threats facing our communities.”
