Chicago, IL- The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus stands in solidarity with our immigrant community during this time of uncertainty and concern. In response, they are reminding residents of their rights under Illinois law, which is designed to ensure that all individuals can live with dignity, security, and freedom from fear or discrimination.
State Senator Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) and State Representative Norma Hernandez (D-Melrose Park) – co-chairs of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus – have worked tirelessly with their colleagues to ensure their communities are prepared for a potential attack on their rights.
“No person should live under the shadow of fear. Yet today, this is the harsh reality many face,” said Villa. “Together, we are doing everything we can to lay the foundation of safety and security for our neighbors. We stand united in our unwavering commitment to combat hate in all its forms. Our resolve to protect and defend our communities grows stronger each day.”
“I stand firm in our commitment to protecting immigrant families from the fear of deportation and the unjust practices of ICE. No one should live in fear of being torn from their families due to their immigration status,” said Hernandez. “It is up to us to defend and protect our neighbors from these hateful practices by this administration. We will not let fear or intimidation divide us—we will stand strong for justice and humanity.”
Together, the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus released the following statement:
“Starting this week, countless families will be left wondering if they will be torn apart—if their children will come home to an empty house, if they’ll be safe even for a simple errand to the corner store. Tasks that should be routine—like going to the laundromat or earning an honest living—are now being tainted by the divisive rhetoric that has been spewed for months. This campaign of hate is threatening the very fabric of our communities, and it’s time to make it clear: we will not stand by and let it happen.
The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus is on high alert, ready to defend Illinois’ immigrant communities from any disruption or harm. We will not allow the hateful agenda of a few to undermine the rights and dignity of hardworking families. Our ongoing efforts are focused on strengthening protections, providing critical resources, and ensuring that Illinois’ immigrant community remains resilient and united in the face of these attacks. We are prepared to take whatever action is necessary to defend our communities, our rights, and our future. The fight has only just begun.”
