The family-owned market operates at 2517 Hubbell Ave. with Mexican and Latino meat cuts, prepared foods, tamales and a rotating selection of house sausages.
Updated Aug. 28, 2026.
Cerro Grande Meat Market is open on the east side of Des Moines at 2517 Hubbell Ave., approximately one year after an electrical fire destroyed the Lopez family’s former business in Ottumwa.
The family-owned market specializes in fresh meat, Mexican and Latino cuts, marinated meats, tamales, ready-to-cook foods and house sausage recipes. Individual products and sausage flavors rotate and may not be available every day.
Owner and butcher Jose Lopez represents the fourth generation of a family trade that began in Mexico more than a century ago. His family previously operated markets in Marshalltown and Ottumwa before rebuilding the business in Des Moines.
Cerro Grande celebrated its Des Moines grand opening July 19, 2026. La Michoacana Elite, a Mexican-style ice cream business, also operates at the Hubbell Avenue address.

The market carries specialty cuts and rotating sausages
Cerro Grande offers cuts and preparations used in Mexican, Central American and other Latino cuisines, including marinated meats intended for tacos and fajitas. The selection also includes prepared foods for customers who want to reduce the amount of cooking or preparation required at home.
The business has developed more than 42 sausage recipes. The rotating selection ranges from familiar breakfast and garlic varieties to less common combinations, including a cordial cherry-and-chocolate sausage.
The number refers to the recipes developed by the market, not to a guarantee that every flavor will be available simultaneously. Seasonal ingredients, production schedules and customer demand determine which varieties are offered on a particular day.
Four generations of butchery shaped the Des Moines store
The Lopez family’s butchery tradition began with Jose Lopez’s great-grandfather, who operated a meat counter in Mexico during the early 1900s. The work later passed through Lopez’s grandparents and his father, Ramon Lopez.
Jose Lopez expanded the family’s selection by developing new sausages, prepared foods and specialty cuts. He has also used social media to explain products and show customers different ways to prepare them.
The Lopez family rebuilt after the Ottumwa fire
An electrical fire destroyed the family’s Ottumwa business on July 6, 2025. Rebuilding in the same building was not practical, and the family ultimately relocated the market to Des Moines.
The Hubbell Avenue store allows Cerro Grande to continue the family trade while serving customers in the Des Moines area. Its current focus is the market’s operation, product selection and availability at the new location.
