It may not be the Pay Per View fight night that you are used to, but this weekend the UFC is officially back in business. It was just three weeks ago that the organization was put on hold by its owners and the state of California after trying to hold UFC 249 at the Tachi Palace and Casino Resort. The state and the nation was not ready nor was it safe to have the UFC return to action just yet. But this weekend, the UFC will return to the octagon with UFC 249. This will be the first of three events with the next two on May 13th and May 16th and they will all take place at the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
The main event this Saturday night will be between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. And those that have been following this fight soap opera knows that it was supposed to be UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov versus Ferguson, but travel restrictions in Russia held the champion in his country and Gaethje got the call to fill in. They will now fight for the interim lightweight championship with the winner getting Nurmagomedov later this year.
And before what could be one of the most violent fights of 2020, the co-main event will feature former bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz taking on current flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo. And if that wasn’t enough, fan favorites, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Anthony “Showtime” Pettis will meet again earlier in the night on the evening’s preliminary card.
Also featured on the card that night will be heavyweights, Francis Ngannou vs Jairzinho Rozentruik, Jeremy Stephens vs Calvin Kattar and Alexey Oleynik vs Fabricio Werdum, just to name a few.
With a star-studded card kicking off his three event line up all within eight days, White has stacked the other two cards as well, showing that if the UFC is going to be the first live sports back on television in almost two months, he is going to give the fans the fights they want to see and the fights that had to be postponed due to the pandemic. And as White is no stranger to his critics that have voiced their concern for having these events so soon, he said last month that all three events will take place without a live audience.
