The DSM Book Festival returns to Des Moines this weekend with a free day of author events, panels, workshops, vendors and activities for readers of all ages.

The event will be held Saturday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Franklin Event Center, located at 4801 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines. The festival is presented by Beaverdale Books and the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association, with programming that includes children’s literacy activities hosted by the Des Moines Public Library.

This year’s festival also connects with the Des Moines Public Library Foundation through an AViD author event and a special Mother’s Day silent auction benefiting free cultural programming in the community.

A free festival for readers, families and local book lovers

The DSM Book Festival is free and open to the public. Attendees can expect author programs, panels, workshops, children’s activities, vendors, book signings and opportunities to meet publishers and fellow readers.

The festival is designed for all ages. According to event information from Beaverdale Books, the day will include literacy activities for children, food trucks outside the south main entrance and a festival store with books by featured authors and panelists.

Taylor Wolfe will speak at 7 p.m. as part of AViD

After the daytime festival, author Taylor Wolfe will take the main stage at 7 p.m. as part of the Des Moines Public Library’s AViD series.

Wolfe is the author of Just a Busy Season, a new essay collection that looks at parenting young children, social anxiety and life as a millennial woman with humor and honesty. Her book was released April 28.

She is also the writer behind The Daily Tay blog and has built a large online audience, with more than 800,000 followers on Instagram. Her work has been featured on the Today show, The Dodo and other outlets.

The AViD event will take place at Franklin Event Center, the same location as the festival.

A Mother’s Day auction will benefit free library programming

The Des Moines Public Library Foundation is also launching a special Mother’s Day silent auction in partnership with JouJou Des Moines, a Montessori playspace.

The auction includes packages designed to support local moms and lighten the load ahead of Mother’s Day. The fundraiser benefits the Des Moines Public Library Foundation, which supports free cultural programming for the Des Moines community.

The silent auction is open virtually through Wednesday, May 6. There is no cost to register for a virtual auction ticket.

Package sponsors include Ballet Des Moines, JouJou Des Moines, phClean, Salon Spa W, The Slow Down Coffee Co. and Zoom Room West Des Moines.
