Davenport LULAC Fiesta Celebrates 49th Year

In its 49th year, the Davenport’s League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 10 will hold its annual fiesta on Saturday, September 13.   As in the past years, the main focus of the event will be the coronation of the LULAC Fiesta Queen.  According to Henry Vargas, chairman of the fiesta, a total of $369,000 has been given out in scholarships since 1978.  This year alone, 8 scholarships will be given out to the candidates.

“15 years ago, we depended on bingo to give out more money for the scholarships,” Henry Vargas said.   Mr. Vargas explained that the scholarships don’t just go to students of Hispanic heritage.

Davenport’s LULAC Council 10 has helped students of all backgrounds go to the school of their choosing and some have gone as far as Columbia University in New York.   Doors open at 5 p.m., with food served at 6 p.m.  The coronation of the Queen will start at 7 p.m. with music from Rit-Mex from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.  The LULAC Activity Center is located at 4224 Ricker Hill Road in Davenport.
