U.S. Congresswoman for the 17th District in Illinois Cheri Bustos announced this morning that she will not seek re-election.
“Each decade, I have taken time to reflect and evaluate what my next chapter might bring. That’s how, 10 years ago, I decided to run for Congress.
And it’s why, today, I am announcing I will not seek reelection after completing this term.” She said in a press release.
“And I’m proud of the progress we have made. Together, we elevated and addressed the challenges of working people—from expanding healthcare and pushing back against reckless policies that endangered our most vulnerable to responding to a historic pandemic while protecting basic rights to organize, travel, marry and vote.”
Bustos was elected in 2012. She is the first woman elected to Congress from her district in the northwestern part of the state, anchored by the Illinois side of the Quad Cities and partially including Peoria and Rockford. In 2019, Bustos became chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)
