A Central Academy mathematical modeling team achieved historic results this year, finishing in the top 10 in the world on the HiMCM and the top 8 in the United States on the IM2C USA Regional Championship sponsored by COMAP (the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications).

The team members who comprise Central Academy’s Team 11462 are Maverick Baccam ’23, Alec Fialkov ’24, Zack Phillips ’22 and Ryan Trujillo ’23.

In the fall, five teams from Central’s Advanced Math Problem Solving course participated in the HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling).  The 12-day contest asks students to choose one of two real-world problems and create a resolution via a mathematical model and a paper detailing the creation of their model, its strengths and weaknesses, sensitivity analysis of the model and a letter detailing why their model should be chosen to solve the issue.

Three Central Academy teams earned Honorable Mention, one team earned Meritorious Distinction and Team 11462 earned Outstanding recognition in HiMCM by finishing among the top 8 teams in the world.  Only one other Central Academy team (in 2007) had ever achieved a finish in the top 10 in the world.

The IM2C (International Mathematical Modeling Challenge) USA Regional Championship invited approximately the top 200 teams in the U.S. to compete in a 5-day modeling contest where students were challenged to derive a model that creates the most efficient method for facilitating the boarding of airplanes at airport terminals.  Two Academy teams from the HiMCM were eligible to participate in the IM2C.  Team 11461 (Evelyn Aron ’24, Ri DeWild ’24, and Max Roach ’25), by virtue of their Meritorious Distinction on HiMCM, and Team 11462.

Team 11462 was the only American team to be designated both Outstanding on the HiMCM and as a Finalist on the IM2C.
