Diez! Ten! It’s been 10 years of hosting the annual ‘Cedar Rapids Latino Festival’ and we’re excited to be back in 2021. This year’s event will again be held at McGrath Amphitheatre, 475 1st St SW in downtown Cedar Rapids. This family friendly event is free and open to the public Sunday, September 12, 2021 from 11:00 – 5:00 pm.
The festival will offer a variety of local Latin-American music acts, including Latino bands La Diferencia and Son Peruchos, and local community performers and dancers. Authentic Mexican and Cuban food from local vendors will be available for purchase. There will be many free activities for children, including piñatas, face painting, crafts and other activities. Lawn-chairs and dancing are encouraged!
This festival also commemorates the observance of the National Hispanic Heritage Month which celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The festival has been well attended and well received by the Latino Community and the community-at large for the past ten years. With continued support from our sponsors and media partners with coverage and promotions of our event, we’ve been able to expand our reach and grow this event and recognition of the Latino Culture in our community!
