Former Governor Rod Blagojevich was formally impeached last week by a unanimous Illinois Senate vote of 59-0. During the seven hours of debate, not one Senator defended the Governor, said a report from the Chicago Tribune. Another unanimous vote banned him from ever again holding a public office, effectively ending the Governor’s political career. Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn was shortly after sworn in as Governor.
Quinn will continue to serve as Governor until the next election. An outsider to so-called “Chicago politics”, Quinn vowed to end corruption, shrink the $5 billion budget deficit, and repair Illinois’ broken reputation. Quinn also vowed to reopen key historical sites which Blagojevich recently closed amidst budget crunches. "The ordeal is over," said Quinn. "In this moment, our hearts are hurt. And it’s very important to know that we have a duty, a mission to restore the faith of the people of Illinois in the integrity of their government."
