Recently in Asheboro, North Carolina a Latino in Asheboro High School was denied his diploma for wearing the Mexican flag over their graduation gown during the ceremony. The student Ever López wore the flag during the graduation ceremony, it wasn’t until López was stopped in the middle of walking across the stage where Principal Penny Crooks stopped López and told López the Flag was a distraction.

Hours after the ceremony and video being posted, it started to get attention through many members of the community then started to gain traction through social media.

Two statements have been released by the school district  regarding the incident that took place during the ceremony on Thursday, June 3rd.

The District said in its release “The heart of the issue is the fact that the student did not follow the established dress code for the event and detracted from the importance and the solemnity of the ceremony.”

In the release they continue “Our dress code is in place to ensure the dignity of the event is upheld and is fair to all students. Graduation is a milestone event and it is grossly unfair for one individual to diminish this event by violating the dress code.”

#FreeEversDiploma trended in the fight to get López Diploma; the principal has asked for an apology from Lopez.
