County auditors must receive mailed requests by 5 p.m. on Oct. 19, ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
By Hola Iowa
Iowa voters can now request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 3 general election. County auditors began accepting requests on Aug. 25. After that, the mail-request deadline follows on Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. CT.
Voters who miss that mail deadline still have an option. They can request and cast an absentee ballot in person at their county auditor’s office through Nov. 2. In addition, in-person absentee voting opens statewide on Oct. 14.
Key dates for the Nov. 3 election
- Aug. 25 — First day to file an absentee ballot request with a county auditor
- Oct. 14 — First day of in-person absentee voting
- Oct. 19, 5 p.m. CT — Deadline for a mailed absentee ballot request to be received by the county auditor
- Nov. 2 — Last day for in-person absentee voting
- Nov. 3 — Election Day; polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT
Mailed ballots must arrive by 8 p.m. on Election Day
A completed absentee ballot must reach the county auditor’s office by mail. Specifically, it has to arrive before polls close at 8 p.m. CT on Nov. 3. Otherwise, it will not count. Also, the postmark date does not extend that deadline.
Voters need photo ID to cast a ballot in person
Iowa requires one accepted form of identification to vote in person. Options include an Iowa driver’s license, a non-operator ID, a U.S. passport, or a military or veteran ID. A signed Iowa Voter Identification Card also qualifies, as does a signed tribal ID with photo. Even without ID, voters still have a path: another registered voter in their precinct can attest to their identity.
Where to request the form and track a ballot
Voters can request an absentee ballot through the Iowa Secretary of State’s absentee voting page. The same page also allows voters to track their ballot’s status. For county-specific contact information, voters can turn to the statewide county auditor directory.
