MOLINE, Illinois — Two road construction projects will affect traffic in Moline beginning this week. Part of 35th Street will close Friday, Aug. 28, while lane and ramp restrictions continue near I-74 and John Deere Road.
The 35th Street closure will affect the section between 37th and 38th avenues. The City of Moline expects the approximately $300,000 reconstruction project to continue through late October.
Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Transportation has started an $8.9 million project at the I-74 and John Deere Road interchange. That work began Aug. 24 and is scheduled to continue through Nov. 30.
Traffic will remain open in both directions on I-74 and John Deere Road. However, overnight lane closures, changing traffic patterns and two temporary ramp closures could cause delays.
35th Street closes to through traffic Aug. 28
The City of Moline will close 35th Street to through traffic between 37th and 38th avenues beginning Friday.
The city has not provided a specific detour for the closure. As a result, through traffic will need to use surrounding streets until the project is finished.
The reconstruction includes:
- Removing and replacing the concrete pavement.
- Improving the storm sewer system.
- Adding a sidewalk and ramps along the east side of 35th Street.
- Completing minor driveway improvements.
- Installing sod and finishing other related work.
Walter D. Laud Inc. is the contractor. Construction is expected to continue through late October.

I-74 and John Deere Road work continues through Nov. 30
IDOT’s project covers I-74 from south of 27th Street to north of the Rock River. It also includes John Deere Road between 16th and 38th streets.
First, crews will use overnight lane closures on portions of both roads. At least one lane in each direction will remain open during this stage.
Later, construction will move to daytime hours. Traffic will continue in both directions, but two ramps leading toward Iowa will close during separate stages.
- Stage 2: The ramp from westbound John Deere Road to westbound I-74 will close.
- Stage 3: The ramp from eastbound John Deere Road to westbound I-74 will close.
IDOT has not provided the exact starting date or duration for either ramp closure. Signed detours will be installed when each closure begins.
Local traffic and emergency access will remain available throughout the project.

The city is managing the 35th Street reconstruction. In contrast, IDOT is responsible for the work at I-74 and John Deere Road.
The I-74 project will prepare the interchange for a larger reconstruction scheduled to begin in 2027. Therefore, the current restrictions are an early phase rather than the full interchange replacement.

The I-74 interchange will receive a larger rebuild in 2027
IDOT plans to replace the existing cloverleaf interchange with a diverging-diamond design. The configuration is intended to reduce vehicle conflict points and eliminate some of the weaving movements at the interchange.
The larger project will also expand I-74 from two to three lanes in each direction between 27th Street and the Rock River.
In addition, IDOT plans to reconstruct parts of John Deere Road, 27th Street and 36th and 38th avenues. The work will include drainage, signs, landscaping, bridge replacement and shared-use paths.

The 35th Street closure begins Friday, Aug. 28, and is expected to remain in place through late October. The current I-74 and John Deere Road construction phase is scheduled to end Nov. 30, while the dates for the two ramp closures remain pending.
