The Neighborhood Development Corporation is pleased to announce the renaming of its commercial properties on East Grand Avenue in Des Moines as “La Placita on East Grand.”

La Placita on East Grand is a collection of newly developed and older renovated commercial buildings on the north side of East Grand, between 15th and 16th Street.

These properties were acquired by the Neighborhood Development Corporation (NDC) and developed over a ten year period. In 2015 they were renamed “La Placita on East Grand”, which means the little plaza or marketplace (in Spanish).

La Placita includes six different buildings with shared parking, and has approximately 16 commercial tenants with apartments on the second floor of one of the buildings.

La Placita contains 16 local businesses, the majority of which are owned and operated by members of the Hispanic Community in Des Moines. Notable businesses include:  Los Laureles Restaurant, Paleteria La Michoacana, La Tienda Mexicana, and Panaderia La Mona.

As part of the rebranding effort, the commercial center is being repainted in bright colors, artist John Neal is painting a festive mural, and NDC is hosting a Jazz in July event – the first ever on Des Moines’ East Side.
