After back to back losses in 2024, UFC strawweight, Loopy Godinez (13-5) earned her way back into the win column last March in Mexico City and hopes to break into the top ten of her division this weekend at UFC 319: Du Plessis vs Chimaev in Chicago. “I feel better than ever,” said Godinez. “I’m just ready for Saturday to get it done.”
Godinez will take on former strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade (26-14) on the preliminary portion of the evening’s bouts as she and her team predicted earlier that this fight was one that was very possible. “We saw that match up and that there was potential to have it,” explained Godinez. “And she was on our list of course, so we were super excited to hear her name.”
Chicago has some big shoes to fill for Godinez as she is fresh off a fight from her home country of Mexico. But as most fighters say, it’s not the place that makes the fighter, it’s the fighter that makes the place. “Fighting in Mexico was so crazy and so cool, and the energy and the people were amazing,” said Godinez. “This is my first time in Chicago and it looks like a nice city. I haven’t explored too much but I’m looking forward to fighting here on Saturday night.” And with UFC Noche just one month away in Texas, Godinez doesn’t rule out being back in action in September. “I’m willing to do whatever,” said Godinez. “So, let’s put it out there.”
A Windy City win this weekend over the former Brazilian champ would put Godinez in the top half of the division and could potentially set up a title contender fight for her next go-around. And as she can look a bit to the future, she is laser-focused on Saturday night and Andrade first. “I see that happening but I couldn’t tell you what the UFC wants to do,” explained Godinez. “So, I’m just focusing on Saturday night and after that we take the next step.
Loopy Godinez will face Jessica Andrade at UFC 319: Du Plessis vs Chimaev, this Saturday, August 16th on ESPN and ESPN+ and Pay-Per-View. Prelims on at 7pm CT, main card at 9pm.
