This time the weather played us wrong, the strong snowstorm that fell upon the Quad Cities forced the events organizers to postpone the date in which the traditional “Posada Navideña” would take place.

The Quad City Botanical Center and Casa Guanajuato will present their “Posada Navideña” on Saturday, December 20th at 2 p.m. at the Quad City Botanical Center, located on 2525 4th Ave., Rock Island, Illinois.  There will be no cost to those who attend.

The Posada is a popular festivity that takes place in Mexico and in other countries in Latin America that is celebrated during the nine days before Christmas, from the 16th to the 24th of December.  The festivity is in remembrance of Mary and Joseph’s pilgrimage out of Nazareth to Bethlehem in which they went looking for shelter to await the birth of baby Jesus.

The pilgrims along with a group of people invited to the Posada leave the home and go door to door asking for shelter, singing carols.  The people who are inside are supposed to deny them shelter in order for them to go ask for shelter elsewhere, until they are given somewhere to stay singing traditional Posada songs.

When the pilgrims, who are generally children are welcomed they celebrate with food and piñatas.  This year the Posada at the Botanical Center in Rock Island will have a procession that will begin when the children are welcomed to the Botanical Center.  There will be live music by Jose Alvidrez and of course there will also be piñatas for the children.
