The United States has always been known as a melting pot of cultures. People from all over the world come to this land of opportunities. It is very important not only for newcomers to become part of the American culture, but also it is essential to be able to share one’s culture with people of the United States because when diverse people unite great things are bound to happen. The Multicultural Family Center in Dubuque is a place where different cultures can come together, share and grow.

 

The Multicultural Family Center (MFC) first opened its doors on July 9 of 2005. The MFC was opened to provide educational and non-profit services, outreach, community building and personal and economic development. It was a big task for a new organization. That is why throughout the years they developed a special approach that would not only reach out to the community, but also address the needs of the members of the community. The MFC offers a variety of programs to anyone interested in Dubuque. According to the MFC website, “Relationships –intergenerational, intercultural, and interracial – are at the core of the MFC’s identity.” No matter culture, race or age everyone is welcomed here. 

MFC offers a great selection of education and cultural programs to Dubuque community members. Among countless interesting programs there are programs for the whole family including computers for families, cultural cooking nights, Juntos: Together for a better Education, Flavors of the Philippines. Also there are a lot of programs many adults might be interested in. They have programs for women’s self defense, adult hip hop, zumba, capoeira, qigong, qi therapy, African American play reading club, French café. MFC offers quite a few interesting programs for teens as well. Among them there is teen night, teen empowerment, teen tech club, LGBT+Youth Network, and tutoring program. Youth programs include youth hip hop, kung fu, capoeira, Spanish language immersion, beginning chapters’ book club and tutoring. Besides joining the MFC for these educational programs they also want to cordially invite everyone to the “Taste of the World” event on April 18, 2015 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at Five Flags Civic Center, located at 405 Main St. in Dubuque, IA. This is the sixth year for the Taste of the World. There will be cultural displays, performances, food samples from over 20 different countries and children’s activities. Please donate at the admission. Suggested donation is $5 per person and $15 per family and the money will be used to support programs at the Multicultural Family Center. Tickets are available at the door. This is a great way to experience different cultures without leaving your own backyard. Also, it is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Multicultural Family Center and everything they have to offer to the community.

Thanks to Multicultural Family Center in Dubuque people of different cultures, races and generations have a place to meet and learn something from each other.
