It’s the beginning of another year again.  The last of the Christmas cookies have been finished, the cups of eggnog are empty and all that is left is the guilt of not staying true to whatever diet you were on before the holidays hit.  If you are a gym rat like I am, it is also the time where you notice many new faces fulfilling their New Year’s resolution of staying healthy.

It’s no secret that mixed martial artists are some of the most fit and healthy athletes on the planet.

Mike Dolce, author of Three Weeks to Shredded, and best known for being the leading strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist to some of the UFC’s biggest stars like Thiago Alves, Quentin “Rampage” Jackson and Vitor Belfort, wrote his second book Living Lean late in 2011, and although its been awhile since it’s release, it is still a great template for getting back into shape or staying in shape.

Dolce, who went from a 280lbs. power lifter to 170 lbs. mixed martial artist, has redefined how to eat and workout.  In Living Lean, Dolce gives step by step circuit training tips as well as provides his own recipes for what to eat and why.  He stresses organic food and lots of fresh vegetables and fruit a lot in the book also.

My favorite part of the book was the cardiovascular training section.  This is where Dolce outlines different levels of interval treadmill workouts.  This is especially good for the winter months where runners aren’t outside as much.  Interval running is also a great way to change up the way you run. Anyone who exercises regularly knows that breaking your routine is one of the hardest things to do in the gym and at home.

In Living Lean, Dolce isn’t telling the reader to do anything drastic.  He is simply giving advice on how to tweak what you are already doing to make it better.  The cover of his book says it best; “Don’t count calories!  Make calories count!”
