For years the Iowa Latino population has been steadily growing. To help strengthen the Latino communities in Iowa, in 1999 the Iowa Latino Conference was created. This conference focuses on Latino communities. Both Latinos and non –Latinos come together to explore more in depth the Latino culture and to offer networking opportunities to Latinos leaders all over Iowa. This year the Iowa Latino Conference will be on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the University of Iowa’s Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). The conference will consist of the following events: The Latinos Youth Leadership Summit and The Latino Professional Development Institute.

The Latino Youth Leadership Summit will be on Friday, October 3 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, at Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City, IA. This event is there to help Latino high school student from across Iowa with enrichment and development of their values, identity and community awareness. Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch , founder of Educational Achievement Services will be a keynote speaker and she also will present a workshop. Omeyocan Dance Company will also present. And for first time in a history of Iowa Latino Youth Conference there will be Latino History Competition. Students from 10 high schools will participate in this competition. This is a great, educational and empowering event for young people.

The Latino Professional Development Institute will be held on Friday, October 3, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, at Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City, IA. This year the opening ceremony will be a joined event with the Youth Summit and Raul Curto, Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will welcome the participants. After that, there will be blessing by Omeyocan Dance Company and keynote speech by Consuelo Kickbusch. When the opening ceremony ends participants of the Latino Professional Institute will come together to review data presented by John-Paul Chaisson-Cardenas concerning the state of Latino Youth in Iowa. This year’s topics of the workshops include Fair Housing; the Latinos Educational Opportunity Gap; Poverty Wealth and Employment; Health and Well Being; Immigration and National Origin Issue; Latino/a Youth Development, Entrepreneurship; Business and Economic Development; Parenting, Early Learning and Child Welfare; ELL, Civil Rights Mandates and English Only. During these afternoon sessions participants will be involved in meeting in one of four different groups that will focus on the following topics: Civic Engagement and Leadership, Education, Health and Employment, Labor, Entrepreneurship.

The Iowa Latino Conference is an annual event that lets Latinos from across Iowa come together to learn from each other, to discuss important issues that the Latino communities face today and to just meet new interesting people, create new connections and to celebrate our culture.
