Thanksgiving is a holiday best known for family and food.  Running is not something you would normally associate Thanksgiving with.  But the

Scott County Family YMCA would beg to differ as they host, for the 26th year, The Scott County Family Y McCarthy-Bush Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning.  “It’s a good way to get up and get moving before the family gets together,” said Missy Knott, Center Director of the Bettendorf Family Y & Co-Race Director.  When registering you have your choice of the 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk or for a more challenging morning, the 5-Mile Run/Walk.  Some new additions to the race this year include a 2-Person Relay race for the 5 mile run and a Kid’s Fun Zone, where runners can drop off their children while thaey run as trained staff watch them in the Kid Gym, along with an indoor bounce house and plenty of games, arts and crafts to keep them busy during the event.  Something unique to this race is the Out of Town Trotter, where even if you won’t be in town for the race you can still show your support.  “We even have someone from Japan this year.” said Knott.  Having participated in this for almost as long as it has been going on, Frank Klipsch IV, Corporate Communications Director of the Scott County Family Y stresses the importance of family and tradition around this time of year.  “For a lot of people coming down here to run it is a part of their tradition,” explained Klipsch IV.  “Just as much as the pie and turkey is.”  100% of the proceeds will go to YMCA scholarships to area kids and families.  With the weather projected to be in the high 50’s on race morning, the Turkey Trot will definitely leave families with something to talk about at dinner and provide memories to last a lifetime.
