The Quad City Botanical Center along with Casa Guanajuato, will present the ‘Posada Navideña’ on December 16, 2008 from 5:30-8:30p.m. at the Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 4th Ave., Rock Island, Illinois. The event is free to the public.
From December 16th to Christmas Eve, children often perform the ‘Posada’ processions or Posadas. Posada is Spanish for Inn or Lodging. There are nine Posadas. These celebrate the part of the Christmas story where Joseph and Mary looked for a room in an Inn. For the Posadas, the outside of houses are decorated with evergreens, moss and paper lanterns. In each Posada, They call at the houses of friends and neighbours and sing a song at each home. The song they sing is about Joseph and Mary asking for a room in the house. But the children are told that there is no room in the house and that they must go away. Eventually they are told there is room and are welcomed in! When the children are welcome they have a party with food and Piñatas.
The ‘Posadas’ at the Botanical Center will have a procession that will start at 6p.m. with the children asking to come into the Botanical Center. Live Posada Music will be performed by Jose Alvidrez. During the event the there will be 3 Piñatas, one for children 5 years and younger, one for children ages 5-10 and one for children over 10 years. You may also enjoy traditional Mexican holiday food and hot chocolate and coffee donated by Starbucks.
