At the age of just 19, Omar Olvera echoed Mexico’s anthem in Doha, Qatar.
Mexico showcased its diving prowess once again, with Osmar Olvera’s stellar performance securing the gold at the Swimming World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
With a remarkable score of 431.75 on the 1-meter springboard, the Mexican athlete outshone Li Shixin from Australia who obtained a silver medal with a score of 395.70, and British diver Haslam, who claimed a bronze medal with a score of 393.10.
Paola Espinosa is the only other Mexican diving world champion, capturing gold on the 10-meter platform at Rome in 2009.
Olvera’s flawless dives underscored his exceptional performance in the springboard event.
Born on June 5, 2004, Osmar Olvera Ibarra embarked on his diving journey in 2017 at the FINA Diving World Series in Kazan, Russia, where he finished fifth in the men’s synchronized diving from the 10-meter platform. He was only 12 years old at this time. Three years later, he competed once more in the series, this time in Montreal, Canada, securing third place alongside Dolores Hernández in the mixed synchronized diving event from the 3-meter springboard.
In 2023, Olvera took part in the Swimming World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, claiming second place in the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Additionally, he excelled at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, clinching three gold medals in the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, as well as in synchronized diving with Rodrigo Diego López from the 3-meter springboard.
In an interview he said: “I have demonstrated again that I am one of the best, but I want more.” Olvera wants to continue demonstrating himself and his country of the talent he possesses.
Many top athletes missed Doha since it hosted a year behind schedule because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Osmar Olvera, took the opportunity and succeeded among his fellow competitors.
