However, No Clear Presidential Winner Emerges on Super Tuesday

Senators Barack Obama (D-Illinois) and John McCain (R-Arizona) won the Illinois primaries on Super Tuesday easily, however throughout the nation, no clear frontrunner emerged. On the Republican side, McCain solidified his lead and Romney lost ground to Huckabee. Huckabee joked that Romney said that it’s a two man race, but the two men are McCain and Huckabee.

Twenty four states held primaries or caucuses and the Latino vote is being credited for giving Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York), victories in several states.

East Moline Political activist, Eva Savala said the success Hillary had with the Latino vote can be attributed to the community being able to recognize leadership and commitment.

“She’s concerned for all of us, not just woman. She’s experienced, artistic, but what surprises me is her strength,” Savala said. “It makes me feel great, gives hope to our daughters, granddaughter, and in my case great granddaughters.”

Locally, in a very close race, State Senator Mike Jacobs defeated Paul Rumler. The final vote tallies were just two percent difference for Jacobs in Rock Island County but the other four counties (Henry, Mercer, Carroll, and Whiteside) voted Jacobs heavily.   Representative Mike Boland also won over Jerry Lack with 20 percent more than his opponent. The Rock Island Schools Referendum passed which results in a $22 million property tax increase to improve the city’s schools.

Nationally, the Democrats remain split with Senator Hillary Clinton winning in at least eight big states. Senator Barack Obama won in at least thirteen states. As Hola America went to press New Mexico had not been decided but is expected to go Clinton’s way. The popular vote put Hillary ahead of Obama but only by 1%.

In the Republican race, Senator John McCain won nine states. The surprise was Governor Mike Huckabee (R-Arkansas) winning at least five states. Governor Mitt Romney (R- Massachusetts) had seven state victories.
