Advocates urge eligible immigrants to apply before it’s too late

Immigrant advocates from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) along with community leaders, citizenship teachers and applicants urge all eligible immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship before the new exam is implemented on October 1.

“Despite continued barriers to citizenship, eligible immigrants want to continue on this path. Last July the fee increased by 66 percent. Now, the immigrant community will face another hurdle to U.S. citizenship with a more difficult test,” said Flavia Jimenez, Director of the New Americans Initiative program at ICIRR. “However, legal permanent residents continue to see the benefits and opportunities of citizenship and that is why we are calling on all eligible immigrants to apply as soon as possible before changes in the exam go into effect.”

Participants also encourage the community to attend upcoming workshops to receive free assistance for U.S. citizenship applications.
