Storm Lake, IA –The third annual International Women’s Day in Storm Lake was an expression of confidence, joy and also courage. Hand-made decorated crowns fashioned by the local Micronesian population lent a festive air to the event held at the United Methodist Church Family Life Center last Saturday.
A panel of special guests spoke to open the program. “Our current administration is affecting so many people,” stated Maria Ramos. “Their policies are making it harder for us. Many of our immigrants are scared. We feel like we are not wanted. It makes us feel like we want to go back into ourselves. We must fight for women’s rights. We must fight for immigrant’s rights. We must fight for LGBTQ rights. We must speak up.”
She encouraged members of the audience to run for two city council seats opening up in November, plus the mayor’s position.
Mayor Porsch also urged people to become involved in the community. “You can be a leader, whether it’s a leader in your family, or a leader in the booster club or running for office.”
“What I like about Storm Lake is that people moved here to make a better life for their children,” said Audra O’Neill, Juvenile Court Officer.
Dr. Garrett Feddersen commended women who make a difference. “Women guided me to where I am today,” he said.
Organizer Selynna Butler said that despite the fact that rights are being stripped away from women, people of color and other marginalized groups, she was undeterred from holding the celebration. “Even though with everything going on, we need this,” she stated.
“Let’s accelerate action for women’s equality!” was the day’s theme.
