Chivas out of Copa Libertadores, Atlas and America in Round of 16
Chivas may be the best team in the Mexican League so far but a late goal by Santos in the 88th minute in another match, kept Chivas from advancing to the next round. Atlas finished first in their group and will now play CA Lanus, a team out of Argentina in the Round of 16.
America will play Flamengo out of Brazil. Brazil (Fluminense, Flamengo, Cruzeiro, Santos FC, and Sao Paulo) and Argentina have a massive presence in the Round of 16 (River Plate, Lorenzo, CA Lanus, Boca Juniors and Estudiantes) with five teams each. Mexico (America and Atlas) and Columbia have two (Atletico Nacional and Cucuta Deportivo) each. Ecuador (Universidad Quito) and Uruguay (Nacional) have one team in the Round of 16.
Pachuca ties Deportivo Saprissa in first leg of CONCACAF Final
Did I say that team from Costa Rica was bad? I was really wrong as Deportivo Saprissa battled back to tie Pachuca 1-1 in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The second leg is Wednesday, April 30 and will be played at the Estadio Hidalgo.
This is the last ever CONCACAF Champions Cup, as a new Champions League starts in August. The winner of the Cup will represent CONCACAF at the FIFA World Club Cup in December.
European Update
In the UEFA Champions League semifinals, Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty kick against Barcelona, which made the first match a 0-0 tie. In the other semifinal, Chelsea and Liverpool finished in a 1-1 tie. The winners of the second leg will advance to the finals, with the first tiebreaker being away goals.
In Spain, Real Madrid is a win away from another championship. With four games left, they have 75 points, ten points ahead of Villareal (65) and 14 ahead of FC Barcelona (61). Javier Aguirre’s Atletico de Madrid would be in the Champions League next year, if they stay in fourth place (55 pts.) Aguirre’s contract also says that he would have to stay with the team, if that were to happen.
