LULAC Council #10 Davenport, Iowa will be holding its 55th annual Fiesta Saturday September 13, 2014.
LULAC’s Fiesta is a night rich in family traditions, culture and celebration. This event commemorates the declaration of Independence of Mexico from Spain in 1810 as well as Hispanic Heritage Month. One of the highlights of this celebration is the tradition of the crowning of the LULAC Queen.
Winning the crown means representing LULAC at parades and other community events. The candidates sell raffle tickets and the one with the most tickets sold wins the crown. All proceeds from the ticket sales go toward the LULAC Scholarship Fund
“This is a very important part of our annual scholarship fundraising effort. For many years the Queen contest has helped sustain the scholarship program” said Mike Reyes, president of LULAC Davenport.
To date the Davenport Council has awarded over $415,000 to approximately 722 area students.
Raising funds for scholarships is the main objective of the LULAC Queen contest but for many of the participants throughout the years it is a family custom.

The 2013 LULAC Queen, Assata Caldwell, a student currently attending Iowa State University will pass her title to the new 2014 LULAC Fiesta Queen.

My name is Aaliyah Lopez I am the daughter of Angela Lacy and Randy Lopez. I am 16 years old and I attend Davenport Central as a Junior. I am involved in volleyball and track. Since being at central I have earned academic excellence every year. I am a member of the LULAC youth council and have volunteered at the LULAC since I was eight years old. After high school I plan on attending college to become a future pediatrician.
My name is Marissa Terronez. I am the daughter of Seferino and Regina Terronez. I am 18 years old and am going to be attending Northern Illinois University this fall to major in special education. I graduated from Alleman high school and was very involved in extra-curricular activities there. Some where key club, foreign language club, Ambassadors, and softball. I love to volunteer in my community and participate in youth group which is called Teens Encounter Christ (TEC). I am very grateful to participate in the LULAC scholarship.
My name is Hannah Rios, daughter of J.D and Amy Rios. I am 15 years old attend Davenport Central as a sophomore. I am involved in golf, Cheerleading, and choir. I have held a 4.0 GPA since 6th grade. After high school I plan on attending college to study in the medical field. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am excited to be a part of LULAC and help provide scholarships for others.
My name is Yari Contreras, I am the daughter of Tar and Erika Macias. I am 18 years old and plan on attending Black Hawk College, thanks in part to the LULAC Scholarship program, to pursue my career as a Criminal Investigator. I graduated from Alleman high school was very involved in cheerleading while I was there. I am also involved in the community and love volunteering. I have volunteered at the Bethel Wesley’s United Methodist Church with the summer camp for kids. I am very exited to be participating this year in the LULAC Queen Contest to raise funds for future recipients of the LULAC scholarships.
