Council 10 of the League of United Latin American Citizens, (LULAC), announced today that students may now apply for this year’s scholarships. The scholarship program is open to entering freshmen only residing in the Quad Cities area. Applications are available from high school counselors in area high schools or can be obtained from the LULAC Scholarship Committee Chairman Henry Vargas – 323-4088 or Ernest Rodriguez – 323-5409.
The deadline for submitting the applications is March 31, 2009 with no exceptions. Scholarship awards are based on grades and academic performance; however, emphasis may be placed on the individual’s motivation, sincerity, and integrity, which can best be revealed through a personal essay. Need, community involvement, and leadership activities will also be considered. Students can go to the LULAC Council #10 web site: http://www.geocities.com/lulac10_2000/ where they can click on Scholarships and download an application.
LULAC has considered education its number one priority since it was established in 1929. LULAC Council 10 of Davenport has awarded over a quarter million in scholarships since 1975. Council 10 raises funds locally through a BINGO operation at its Activity Center, the annual LULAC Fiesta fundraiser, and corporate and individual donations. Local funds are submitted to the LULAC National Scholarship Fund, (LNSF) for matching funds. Matching funds usually amount to 60% or more.
Donations to Council 10 of LULAC may be sent to: LULAC Council 10, P.O. BOX 4616, and Davenport, IA 52808-4616. Donations are tax deductible.
