The gathering was small and the entertainment unremarkable, but any points not in this Fiesta’s favor were undone by a thoroughly charming Fiesta Queen. After the food was cleared away, after a few stock comments from Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba and LULAC director Henry Vargas, and after the runners-up and their escorts had made their way across the floor, there was one subject of attention – Jamie Vargas, 19, a plucky girl with bright eyes and a sunny smile.
She seemed a little overwhelmed by the attentions, and only came onto the dance floor after a two or three other couples and several of the children had led the way. The aspiring artist has a delicate modesty combined with goodwill which will be a delight to experience further at LULAC’s events over the next year.
